Fjellborg Arctic Journeys operates 200km north of the Arctic Circle. In a comparative perspective this means we are situated further north than Nome and Fairbanks in Alaska and north of most of the Siberian taiga too. Due to our extreme location, wearing quality gear is the key to enjoying outdoor adventures to the full. The Arctic Dress Code is simple: Dress in layers and use appropriate materials. According to the local fashion, staying warm is cool!

The Layering Principle

Layer 1
The layer nearest to the body functions to transport moisture away. The layer is made up of socks, underwear, long johns and a long sleeved undershirt. All items must be in a synthetic material, wool or a wool mix. Most importantly – avoid cotton as cotton has the effect of chilling you during activity instead of keeping you warm.

Layer 2
The purpose of the mid-layer is to regulate and reinforce heat insulation and eliminate moisture. We recommend fleece and microfleece because of their unmatched technical functions and light weight.

Layer 3
The purpose of the outer shell is to provide protection against wind and precipitation. The shell material should breathe and permit full freedom of movement.

Functional Accessories
Good footwear is crucial to enjoying winter in Arctic Lapland. Choose boots that are larger than you would normally wear as this allows for thick socks and for warming air to form inside the shoe. Warm gloves and a good hat are equally important. The hat should protect not only the head but also the ears and neck and the gloves should allow for an adequate freedom of movement.

Because Fjellborg Arctic Journeys knows the importance of good clothing all guests are equipped with quality gear before departure. Boots, overalls, gloves and hats are part of the outfit.
