Arctic Lapland is home to one of the largest and most beautiful areas of true wilderness in the world. The scenery is magnificent, varying from the rugged coastal landscapes by the Arctic Ocean to the large forests and river valleys of the inland region. With Fjellborg Arctic Journeys you will be able to experience it all the natural way – travelling in silence and leaving only paw prints behind. The Fjellborg Homestead in Poikkijärvi is situated 200km north of the Arctic Circle. In an international perspective, this is north of Nome and Fairbanks in Alaska, north of Iceland and most of Siberia too. Still, the climate of Arctic Lapland is not uncomfortable; The dry air of the inland region means one can enjoy outdoor adventures in -30 C without actually feeling cold. In the coastal areas the air is more humid but thanks to the Gulf Stream the winters by the Arctic Ocean are still mostly mild. For mushers and lovers of winter sports Arctic Lapland offers ample opportunities. While in most of North America and Europe snow is rapidly disappearing by mid March, in Lapland the magic of winter remains until the beginning of May. Wildlife encounters is part of mushing in Arctic Lapland and learning about the indigenous Sami culture definitely adds to the experience. The semi-domesticated reindeer owned by the Sami is commonly seen on the trail. Other animals inhabiting the region are moose, fox, wolverine, lynx, wolf and brown bear. In spring ptarmigans are abundant, bursting from the thicket of dwarf birch and flying low in front of the teams. Arctic Lapland is a different world in many ways. Yet, thanks to the well-developed network of flights to Kiruna in Swedish Lapland and to Tromsø in Norwegian Lapland mushing with Fjellborg Arctic Journeys is a big adventure within surprisingly easy reach.
