Drive your own team on a breathtaking expedition into the heart of indigenous Sami country, following the old reindeer routes in the magnificent wilderness of Arctic Lapland. 7-day program. This program begins at Kiruna Airport where guests are greeted by guides from Fjellborg Arctic Journeys. After a short transfer you arrive at the beautifully situated Homestead in Poikkijärvi where the Fjellborg family live together with their large pack of friendly huskies. During a welcome lunch you are briefed on the expedition itinerary and introduced to the basics of sled dog mushing. Next you will change into expedition gear, re-pack your equipment and get ready to meet the dogs! The Fjellborg Alaskan Huskies are exceptionally friendly and athletic and know nothing better than to hit the trails together with their team mates. From the Homestead in Poikkijärvi we will sled to the comfortable Fjellborg Wilderness Lodge situated by Lake Väkkärä, 15 km further north. Guests socialize and eat in the large main building and sleep in cosy log cabins. On clear nights the amazing Aurora Borealis often provides spectacular late night entertainment. During the following two days we will mush through the scenic fell areas of Arctic Lapland, visiting remote villages and camps, some of which are only frequented by the indigenous Sami people. The trail climbs above the tree line and during good weather this part of the journeys offers some spectacular views of the Alpine area. On our fourth day we will leave the mountain region behind as we head towards the village of Soppero. Here we will stay in a traditional homestead and our hosts, the Päiviö Family, will introduce us to Sami traditions and to reindeer husbandry, which is the cornerstone of Sami culture. The next day we follow the legendary Tobacco Trail in a south-westerly direction. Our destination is the rustic Jäkkälä Hunting Cabin where we spend the fifth night in a cosy and genuine Lapland-style accommodation. On the sixth morning we depart from Jäkkälä Hunting Cabin, heading back towards Poikkijärvi where it is time to say goodbye to our amazing dogs. On the final evening of our expedition we enjoy a farewell dinner at the Homestead, sharing stories and photos from the trail. The night is spent in comfortable guest accommodation. On the last day of the program we visit the nearby village of Jukkasjärvi where we enjoy a guided tour of the world famous ICEHOTEL. A popular choice among our guests is to add an extra night to their holiday in Lapland by including a stay at ICEHOTEL. However, for those of our guests who are departing from Kiruna Airport after completing a guided tour of the hotel we will provide a transfer to the airport. Tour Info:This 7-day expedition is suitable for both beginners and experienced mushers looking for a true wilderness experience in remote corners of Arctic Lapland. Weather conditions in the alpine region of Lapland can sometimes be demanding, especially during strong winds. Guests must be capable of sledding in these conditions and provide good care for our dogs at all times. Click here for detailed information
