Drive your own team on an exciting backcountry expedition that combines winter camping with comfortable overnight stays at the Wilderness Lodge and the Jäkkälä Hunting Cabin. 4-day program.
This program begins at Kiruna Airport where guests are greeted by guides from Fjellborg Arctic Journeys. After a short transfer you arrive at the beautifully situated Homestead in Poikkijärvi where the Fjellborg family live together with their large pack of friendly huskies. During a welcome lunch you are briefed on the expedition itinerary and introduced to the basics of sled dog mushing. Next you will change into expedition gear, re-pack your equipment and get ready to meet the dogs! The Fjellborg Alaskan Huskies are exceptionally friendly and athletic and know nothing better than to hit the trails together with their team mates.
In the afternoon we sled from the Homestead in Poikkijärvi to the comfortable Fjellborg Wilderness Lodge situated by Lake Väkkärä, 15 km further north. Guests socialize and eat in the large main building and sleep in cosy log cabins. On clear nights the amazing Aurora Borealis often provides spectacular late night entertainment.
On our second day we venture further out in the backcountry where we set up camp in the midst of the wilderness. After pitching our tents we cook ourselves a meal under the star studded northern sky. As darkness settles we will relax comfortable inside our weather-proof tents, staying warm in our sleeping bags which are placed on top of thick reindeer hides.
On the next day we continue in a south-easterly direction following the ice of the Vittangi River. There is a good chance we will encounter moose, reindeer or other wildlife during our journey. Our destination is the rustic Jäkkälä Hunting Cabin which provides basic but cosy accommodation equipped with a traditional sauna.
On the last morning of our expedition we set out in a westerly direction, with the Fjellborg Homestead as our destination. On our way home we will stop to enjoy a tasty lunch served in the wild. When we arrive at the Homestead it is time to say farewell to our amazing dogs. The program is completed in the early afternoon and guests who are departing from Kiruna Airport on the same day will receive a transfer to the airport.
It is worth noting that the world famous ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi is situated only a few minutes away. A popular choice among our guests is to add a few extra days to their holiday in Lapland by including a visit to nearby ICEHOTEL.

This 4-day sled dog expedition is suitable both for novice and experienced mushers.
We offer our guests true wilderness travel at its best, without compromising their safety and comfort. However, winter camping does require an adventurous spirit!
The expedition combines a hands-on winter camping adventure with comfortable stays in quality accommodation. A thorough introduction to sled dog driving will be provided before departure and our experienced guides will be available at all times for support and instruction. This expedition provides an ideal introduction to expedition style sledding.
